Cooper's Rock Mountain Lion Sanctuary

Tecumseh's Move

On July 27, 2002, Tecumseh officially moved from the Original Enclosure to the The Palace, one of the grant-funded large enclosures, recently renovated just for him. The Sanctuary decided to move him without tranquilization if at all possible, and prepared accordingly. These photos show how it went.

Mark Jenkins and Mike Feather carry Tecumseh in his transport crate -- looking much like a royal litter -- from the Original Enclosure to The Palace.

The march continues! Tecumseh kept it interesting by shifting his weight around as much as possible.

Mark and Mike try to maneuver the transport crate into The Palace with a now-irate cougar rattling around inside.

To do it, they have to remove the poles, which are too long to make the turn.

But they're also too long to remove! They had to slide them outside the perimeter fence.

Heave ho guys! Suddenly the poles seemed awfully convenient.

Mark is tying a rope to the gate on Tecumseh's crate, so that he can open the crate without being in the enclosure with the cat.

Using the rope draped over the enclosure fence, Mark lifts the gate to let Tecumseh into his new home.

Tecumseh explores his new home! He made it without tranquilizers. In mere moments after this photo, he started the important task of ripping out all the grass.

Mike Feather hand-built Tecumseh's transport crate. Note the paw cutouts in the roof. Way cool.
