Cooper's Rock Mountain Lion Sanctuary installed the current perimeter fence in 2001. It is required by the United States Department of Agriculture as a safety measure in case a cougar should manage to escape from an enclosure (and it is also helpful to keep uncooperative visitors away from the sanctuary residents). It consists of concrete-anchored steel beams with chain-link walls. Volunteers raised money for the perimeter fence by "adopting" a fencepost. Volunteers also removed the old perimeter fence and installed the present one.
